We are almost ready to start solving equations! I know it seems that I've been saying that forever; but we have actually accomplished a great deal.
We have defined Algebra and looked at it's needed terminology.
We have reviewed all the sets of numbers we will be using.
We have gone into depth with all of the Algebraic properties and tools we will need to solve equations. So what's left? We just need to discuss some final issues that often cause students problems.

Division by zero is undefined. You have probably heard your child quote this sentence.
Students understand what this means when dealing just with numbers (sort of) and they feel smart saying it.
But if you ask WHY division is undefined, they struggle for an explanation. And when working with the more complicated equations where it is extremely important to keep this thought in mind at all times, students don't understand how it applies. Hopefully, we can avoid their troubles.

Are 5/0 and 0/5 the same thing? They don't look the same.

Do they have the same "answer?" Most Algebra students think that both of these expressions have the value 0.
This is problematic.

Remember that fractions have two meanings.
The symbol 3/4 can mean the fraction three-fourths or it can indicate the division problem three divided by four.
First, let's look at some division examples with numbers: 10/2 = 5 or 21/7 = 3 or 48/8 = 6. It is important to remember that each of these problems can be checked by using the inverse operation of multiplication.

Multiply the bottom number (divisor) by the answer (quotient) and the product should be the top number (dividend). Let's check our examples: 10/2 = 5 because (2)(5) = 10 and 21/7 = 3 because (7)(3) = 21 and 48/8 = 6 because (8)(6) = 48. Now, let's revisit 0/5 and 5/0. For 0/5 we have to think (5) (?) = 0, so 0/5 = 0 because it checks, and it makes sense when you consider its meaning.

Zero is being divided into 5 parts.
It makes sense that there would be zero in each of the 5 parts.
For 5/0 we have to think about (0)(?) =5. This is problematic to say the least.

There is simply no answer to this.
Since zero times everything is zero, it is impossible to get 5.

And logically, it is impossible to divide 5 into NO parts.
Thus, we say that division by zero is undefined. This is the first case of "you can't do that" that isn't given a new symbol as its solution. The problem 0/0 is a special case of division by zero because there are several logical answers.

0/0 = 0 seems right because it checks.
But 0/0 = 1 also seems right if you remember that any number divided by itself is one and it checks also.
But then, so does 0/0 = 2 and 0/0=3 and 0/0=4, etc.
It would seem logical to say that 0/0 is infinity. Since all of these are logical but cannot all be true, we say that not only is 0/0 undefined, it is indeterminate.
By now you may be thinking that this is logical and easy, so why the fuss? At this point it is easy.

But as soon as we encounter expressions with variables in the denominator (on the bottom) of a fraction, the situation becomes more complicated.

Consider the fraction 5/y or the fraction 7/(a - 5).

We have said that variables can represent any number, but now that isn't quite true if the variable is in the denominator of a fraction. Now we must remember that division by zero is undefined and we must be sure to consider if there are any numbers that would cause the denominator to become zero.

For example, in our expression 5/y, y can have any value except zero.

Likewise, in the expression 7/(a - 5), a can have any value except.

5 since 5 - 5 = 0. As equations get more complicated, we must first consider if there are any values that cause the "undefined" problem.
Solving equations with variables in the denominator involve three steps: (1) determine if there are any values that will cause an "undefined" situation, (2) solve the equation, and (3) compare the number we think is the solution to the "cannot allow" numbers.
If our number is in that group of "cannot allow" numbers, then our equation has no solution.
Yes, equations often have no solution.
We will deal with this after we get into solving equations and graphing.
Then we will be able to understand why some equations don't have solutions.
Algebra students have difficulty remembering to do that first step so they end up with incorrect solutions.

When my children were young they spent hours listening to short fairy tales on cassette tapes created by their father and myself.
As a result they both were far ahead of their peers in terms of vocabulary development, comprehension and musical ability.

There have been numerous studies, which suggest that promoting auditory literacy increases a child's ability to learn foreign languages and also play musical instruments.

This was certainly the case with my own children, and those of my friends and acquaintances who were also raised either without, or with a severely limited amount time spent in front of the television or watching movies.

Zhu Zhu pets are not a new item to the toy scene this year, but they were formerly known as Go Go Pets. So far the pet that is taking the toy sales top levels this year is the Zhu Zhu Hamster.
I think I would rather own one of these than a real hamster any day.

I am a huge kid at heart, and grew up missing out on a lot of the cool toys since the world outside and the beach was my toy department for the most part. It seems that now I am fascinated by the great toys there are out there.
Zhu Zhu pets are very interactive and just too cute.
Did you own a hamster or guinea pig as a child? My friend was raising hamsters and gave me one and the cage and all I needed to get started as the proud owner of one. I remember that I could not let my cat any where near it for fear that it would be a toy then a snack for her. She was a hunter. One of the things I like is that the toys can move on their own with the battery installed.

It runs on Triple A batteries. You have to remember that the batteries do need to be replaced often, so I recommend getting a battery charger and using rechargeable batteries so the pets can be used more often. Little children love these hamsters, and so do adults because they are fun.
Small children who like to put things in their mouth should be watched when the pets are out to prevent the danger of them with the battery cover and the batteries. That is a concern for smaller children and the other concern is the wheels on the hamster will get tangled in hair, so the toy should not be held around the hair. We all love to get on the floor and watch these toys so just be aware of the toy and your hair if you have longer hair that might get tangled.

The Zhu Zhu hamsters come in a variety of colors and each color has its own set of sounds. I believe each pet has 40 sounds.
Once you own one Zhu Zhu hamster, you will probably be getting it a friend.
There is a world of accessories for the Zhu Zhu pet including a home with tubes and a car that has a garage. The hamster can run into the garage and get into the car then drive out the doors and on an adventure in your house. I think the cutest accessory is the hamster ball.
The Zhu Zhu can travel all over in the protective ball.
It propels itself very well. Some of the negative comments from reviewers state that the hamsters get stuck in the tubes, but that is the case with many toys of this nature.
What kids do not want to help their toys along.

I remember crashing things just so we could set them up right and back on the tracks when we had racing cars and trains.
It was part of the fun and not an inconvenience. On the videos I watched the children seemed to take this in stride and enjoyed helping the hamster reach its destination.

They seemed to be having great fun with their Zhu Zhu hamsters, and watching the videos is the convincing factor when making a decision to purchase one or more.

I would not buy a used one.
I have seen ads for them used, but there is just "something" about buying a used toy that is going to be held a lot and runs on the floor that says "no" to me.

I have heard that they are easy to get and I have also heard that they are difficult to find. Finding Zhu Zhu hamsters at a price that is low is something that might not happen when the demand is as hight as it is right now. Over the past few weeks I have received more than 400 emails and 60 telephone calls from coaching clients, readers of my columns and listeners to my radio show who wanted some tips that would help them get their kids off to a great start to this new school year. I also received more than 200 emails and calls from high school students making the same request.

That's right! Your friendly Life & Executive Coach appears to be big with the pre-adults among us. This is real pressure.
I will provide the requested tips. I will also share one of the biggest mistakes parents make that causes their kids to get off to a slow start in school. But, before I do that I want to acknowledge my teenage readers.
For you teenagers, I want to make the case for why performing at a high level in school may be important in the first place.

Performance in school reflects an understanding that we live in a competitive world. Great study habits and making exceptional grades shows that you can compete and win.

Life rewards the winners among us.

Performance in school reflects more than just the acquisition of information from books. It also sheds light on your ability to set and get worthy goals. Lasting success in the one life you have is impossible without the habit of goal setting and goal getting.
Performance in school reflects a certain degree of self-discipline and organizational skills. For most of us, getting great grades is the result of focus in class and attention to homework. Doing homework shows an understanding of Mobley's Rules of Life #17, #29, and #35: We become good at what we consistently do. Life does not provide rich rewards for sitting around and being really good at mind-numbing activities such as texting, watching TV, and chatting on Facebook.
Spend the bulk of your time doing those things that reflect your highest life goals.
Being able to compete, setting & getting worthy goals, living a life of self-discipline, and developing your organizational skills.

These are four of the reasons why your performance in school is important. If you are still reading this, then you want me to deliver the secrets that will get you and your kids off to a great start this school year.
Here we go: 1.
Sit down with your child and Set Goals for the school year. Goals should include time given to homework each evening, amount of participation in school, and grade targets.
This one action will make the biggest difference in a student's performance.
2.
Meet with the Teacher(s). Request a meeting with the teacher within the first few weeks of school.

Discuss your child's strengths and weaknesses, your hopes for the year, methods of communication, the teacher's style, and homework. An interested parent leads to an interested teacher leads to a higher-performing student.
3. Establish a Study Place and Time in the home. Set aside a portion of time during the evening when the TV is off and homework is completed.

Make sure your kids do their schoolwork first - before TV, Facebook, texting, or any other non-essential activity.
My advice: Your child's room is quite often NOT the best place for quality study. The average child's room is full of too many distractions.

The biggest mistake parents make that causes their kids to get off to a slow start in their schoolwork is not showing interest in schoolwork until the grades are a problem. If you show interest starting on day one, your kids never have a chance to lose their focus on performing in school.

Remember - You (students and parents) DO deserve to live a great life.

The Internet Creates And Sustains New Communities

Over the last decade, multiple universities and established academics have begun to discuss the concept of Internet Culture. Since people have begun to interact online almost as much, and often more than, they talk offline, it is inevitable that we have begun to see the rise of entirely web-based communities. These communities display all the same traits as classical geo-cultural communities, but exist entirely in a virtual space.
The majority of these groups started on or expanded into large message boards. While some of the oldest sites may be gone, we can see their fingerprints on these modern groups. The origins of Internet communications are rooted mostly in what was called Usenet, which was essentially a collection of chat rooms created to discuss specific topics or hobbies.

This early style of communication was quickly adopted and simplified for the masses at the birth of America Online, the first mainstream route to the Internet.
The homepage gave access to the classic chat rooms, as well as links to the newly made sites for traditional retail and entertainment companies.
While some people quickly adopted the chat function of messenger, many of the original Usenet groups moved to what we now call forums.

Forums, and message boards, became the go-to place to discuss your interests, including sports, cars, home repair, or movies and television.

These text forums grew with the technology and became image forums.

Some of the most famous and infamous sites on the Internet are actually just traditional image forums, which include places like 4chan, Reddit, Livejournal, and Tumblr.

These locations became the centers for web communities, because they had the fewest restrictions on what could be mentioned. With frank honesty, many individuals began to grow accustomed to the personalities of other users, which lead to establishing trust and shared experiences.

Shared experiences are the basis of humor, which is often the glue of a community as well as the fastest way to create recognizable cultural themes.

These themes and ideas are dubbed "memes." Even though memes exist outside of the Internet, they are created and spread far more rapidly in digital media. These groups of people slowly created spaces where they shared a sort of historical dialect based on things that happened in the past on the website.
Just like how you and your neighbor may bond over complaining about loud teenagers or late trash pick-up, or by admiring each other's holiday displays, these web-based groups reminisced about memorable comment threads, hilarious YouTube videos, and pictures of cats.

Building your child's self esteem is one of the most important things you can do as a parent. When you start these positive changes, it will stick with your child for their entire life.

Self esteem begins at a child's eariest memories.

You should always offer praise to your child for a job well done. No feat or activity is too small for praise and encouragement.

Your child needs to know that you are there always, that you love him and that you believe in him.

This will help him build confidence that he needs later in life for everything that he tries to do. If the seeds of self esteem are not planted in a child when they are young, it can be very difficult to develop later in life. This is why the responsibility falls on the adults in charge of that child's life.

The Evolution of Gaming

Depending on your age you may or may not remember when video game systems first came out on the market.

There was great excitement at being able to control very basic shapes on the screen using simple controllers.
Video games caused just as much excitement back then as they did now, it just came in a slightly different form.

Games started off with a primitive history, but back then and nobody knew the difference. Buying video game systems has always been a relatively expensive prospect, and it has been cyclical as well.

When video game systems first came on the market people were obviously willing to pay top dollar and that's exactly what manufacturers charged.

It was not cheap to bring one of these new systems into your home by any means, and of course games were similarly expensive as well.
Some might argue that the situation is the same today, but there are also those who consider gaming to be quite affordable now.

What has changed is that while very few people could afford a game system when they first came out, these days it's not uncommon for a household to have one or two different systems at the same time. But most people today remember playing Nintendo for the first time and how exciting it was.
For some people, gaming will never be a special again the matter how fancy current systems get.
It's interesting to reflect back on how various companies vied for position and some came and went without much fanfare.

For a time there was a heavy rivalry between Nintendo and Sega, and of course there were other systems like the TurboGrafx 16.

More systems came and went such as the Genesis, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, and the GameCube.
Sometimes it can be hard to keep track of all of these various incarnations because none of them were quite as special as the original Nintendo. These days most people do their gaming on one of three platforms: the Nintendo Wii, the Xbox, or the PlayStation.

There are wonderful features that allow people to interact online and participate with other gamers from across the world. Games have evolved such an exponential rate that it's difficult to imagine people found the original systems entertaining at all.
It will be interesting to see if we reach a saturation point in terms of complexity of various games, or maybe things will just keep getting better and video games will eventually reach lifelike proportions.
